What does a Project Manager do?
As a project manager, I oversee projects from start to finish. I meet with customers and staff to discuss plans. I help design projects and make sure they follow rules. I also manage resources and solve problems. My job is to make sure everything runs smoothly and meets quality standards.
What made you join the construction industry?
I didn't plan to work in construction. My parents wanted me to do something else. I first studied architecture, then accounting. By chance, I applied to Windemuller. They hired me even though they weren't looking for new people. It turned out to be a great fit, and I've been here for over 12 years.
What's the best part of working in construction?
The best part is the relationships I've built at work. People trust and respect me, even though I started with less experience. I love working as a team and learning from others. It's also great to show my daughter the buildings I've worked on and inspire young women at career events.
What would you tell someone new about joining construction?
Be patient and work hard to prove yourself. Construction isn't a fad - we'll always need buildings and skilled workers. It takes time to gain experience, but it's worth it. Follow your passion, keep learning, and don't give up when things get tough. Construction offers many stable job options if you're dedicated.
What challenges have you faced as a woman in construction?
One big challenge is being the only woman in meetings. It was scary at first, and I worried about seeming unknowledgeable. A mentor told me it's okay to admit when I don't know something. I've also had to learn to control my emotions to avoid seeming weak. Overcoming gender bias and proving myself through good work has been important.
Has it gotten easier for women in construction?
Yes, it's getting better. More women are joining and getting different roles. But there are still fewer women than men. The industry can help by creating welcoming environments, offering mentors, and addressing gender bias. Companies should also have policies that support women, like flexible work hours and rules against discrimination.
What strengths do women bring to construction?
Women often have great attention to detail, thinking skills, and communication. We might not be as strong physically, but we can excel in wiring, planning, and quality checks. My advice is to focus on your strengths and work well with others. Learn from experienced people, but also share your ideas. Keep growing and think like a team player.
How do you inspire future women in construction?
I hope to show that gender doesn't limit success in construction. Hard work and learning can lead to great things. I want to be a role model for young women, proving they can break through old ideas about gender. I support my team and push for more inclusion in the industry. Each woman who succeeds makes it easier for others to follow.
Why is diversity important in construction?
Having different kinds of people, including more women, helps construction grow. It leads to better problem-solving and new ideas. Women bring skills like attention to detail and good communication. Companies can be more welcoming by fighting bias, giving equal chances to move up, and creating a respectful culture. This could mean better facilities on job sites and mentoring programs in offices.
