You are an Assistant Project Manager, what does that mean? What does a day in the life look like?

As an Assistant Project Manager, my role involves overseeing many different aspects of construction projects. On a daily basis, I prepare purchase orders, track changes through change orders and monitor schedule impacts to ensure we're on track and maintain overall organization with all the moving parts. In such a fast-paced environment, staying organized is crucial - it's something that many look to women to excel at, and I strive to demonstrate those strong organizational skills.

Can you point to a specific thing that drew you to the construction industry?

The inclusive and supportive environment at CS Erickson drew me to the construction industry. I've been fortunate to be surrounded by individuals, both men and women, who foster an empowering atmosphere where one's potential is not constrained by gender. The company's commitment to nurturing career growth opportunities appealed to my aspirations.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of working in the construction industry for you?

The most rewarding aspect has been the invaluable interpersonal connections I've forged and the profound sense of accomplishment in witnessing a project's life cycle. Seeing a project progress from inception to completion and playing an integral role in that process is immensely gratifying. The construction industry facilitates collaboration and camaraderie that enriches the journey.

Looking back – What would you say to someone with no experience or awareness about careers in construction and what would you say to them is a good reason to join the industry?

To an individual unfamiliar with construction careers, I would emphasize that a lack of prior experience should not be a deterrent. The industry welcomes fresh perspectives and provides ample opportunities for growth through hands-on training and mentorship. The construction industry offers paths for hard-working individuals to quickly learn and advance. The rewards are there for those willing to put in the effort.

Talk about an aspect that kind of hinders the women joining the construction industry. Can you share a story or experience that highlights some of the unique challenges you have faced as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field? How did you overcome those challenges?

A hindrance for women entering construction can be the lingering perception that it is a male-dominated domain. However, I've learned not to allow others' preconceived notions to dictate my trajectory. Women possess an innate meticulousness and strong work ethic that are invaluable assets. Overcoming challenges requires resilience, leveraging one's unique strengths, and surrounding oneself with a supportive network.

Have you seen any change with women in construction over the past 5 to 10 years? Is it becoming easier to be a woman in this industry? How can the construction industry better support and encourage more women to enter and thrive in this field?

Over the past decade, I've witnessed a significant increase in the number of women in construction roles, which is immensely encouraging. As more women enter the field and support one another, it becomes easier to navigate challenges. The industry can further this progress by actively promoting mentorship programs, providing robust career development opportunities, and fostering an inclusive culture.

What are some of the unique perspectives, skills, or strengths that women bring to the construction industry that might be overlooked or undervalued? Or what is some advice you would give to someone just starting out.

Women offer invaluable perspectives often stemming from our inherent strengths in multitasking, communication, and attention to detail. We approach problems with a unique lens, yielding innovative solutions. My advice to newcomers is to embrace challenges head-on, be proactive in seeking growth opportunities, and never underestimate the value you bring to the table.

As a woman in a leadership or influential role in the construction industry, how do you hope to inspire and pave the way for future generations of women in this field?

In my leadership capacity, I strive to inspire future generations by exemplifying the rewards of perseverance and hard work. I make a concerted effort to uplift other women, provide mentorship, and create an environment where they feel empowered to pursue their aspirations fearlessly. Paving the way involves actively advocating for equal opportunities and nurturing an inclusive atmosphere.

Can you speak to the importance of having a diverse workforce, including more women, in the construction industry? How does it benefit the industry and the projects being undertaken? How can companies in the construction industry create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for women, both on job sites and in office settings?

A diverse workforce fosters creativity, innovation, and varied perspectives – all invaluable assets in the dynamic construction landscape. Women's unique problem-solving approaches elevate project quality and efficiency. To cultivate inclusivity, companies must prioritize fair recruitment and advancement opportunities, offer comprehensive diversity training, and implement family-friendly policies to retain top talent.

What is one thing you would like to say when it comes to Women in Construction – specifically to our young women here in West Michigan.

To the young women of West Michigan considering construction careers, I extend a warm welcome and steadfast support. This industry not only provides rewarding professional opportunities but a chance to showcase your capabilities, break barriers, and inspire positive change. I stand ready to be a mentor and ally in your journey, for you undoubtedly have the potential to thrive.
